Unionists close in on first round victory as final results set to be counted in close race

Unionist presidential candidate Ivan Tattar looks set to become Polasciana’s next president – securing 47% of the vote as results continue to be announced. Mr Tattar and his party are now chasing 3% of the vote they need to win a majority and avoid a run-off election in two weeks time, with some aides confident there are some areas of the country still to declare which are favourable towards the Unionists. Mr Tattar avoided speculation last night saying he was “enjoying the election night atmosphere and was excited to see where the vote ended up”. Outperforming his rivals by almost two-to-one, the Federal Council Leader is almost certain to become President-elect even if he faces a run off vote, given that his potential rivals are stuck in a battle for second place. Just 0.5% currently separates Nationalist challenger Alexei Sukhorukov and Coalition contender Katrina Fischer. After a disastrous campaign, Ms Fischer is chasing several thousand votes to tie with Mr Sukhorukov with around 70% of all votes counted. Ballots in other elections, including governor races in Béspura, Amar and Preaisk are all due to be counted this afternoon with final results due this evening.
