When parliament returns next week in the new year, it is due to vote on the controversial new Environmental Protection Programme (EPP) – designed to counter growing tidal erosion on the south coast. The new scheme which would see the construction of a new tidal control barrier, around 30 miles from the coast of the Isisny Island, is projected to cost up to kR20bn (Kryak). Opposition from the Social Nationalist Party and the independent Business Initiative Scheme (BIS) – launched by the Polasciana Centrists last year, has stalled the programme so far – however with new support from both the Union Party and 15 independent lower-house members, the bill is expected to pass – although with a slim majority. Ludvig Fedorov, the State Minister for Energy, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, said; “It seems increasingly likely that due to new found cross-party support, this bill will pass in the lower house next week. A new optimistic future for environmental protection will break in our country.”
