A court in Durbe, in his home-region Preaisk, today sentenced Andreo Sukao to a further prison sentence following new allegations of criminal, and politically corrupt activity.
Sukao, who served a 12 year jail term between 1995 and 2007, has claimed that the judge was under “significant pressure” from the government to re-commit him to prison. From 1985, until being sentenced in late 1995 for war crimes and corruption, Sukao led the United Confederation Party which sought to implement a radical programme of wealth distribution and planned economic development. Many today are questioning the independence of the Polascianan courts after Mr Sukao’s lawyers managed to prove that new evidence, provided by the government had been central in the case. His lawyers this afternoon suggested that Mr Sukao will appeal the 7 year sentence.
