Polasciana to be named 2028 World Games Winter Series host
The World Games Committee is expected to announce on Tuesday that Polasciana’s Yevcimir region will be awarded the rights to host the 2028 Winter World Games. Meeting for its annual summit this week, where the sporting body usually publicly releases appointed hosts for the next planned sessions, an announcement is planned by its Chair alongside Polascianan National Sporting Chief Marim Kyane. The decision will mark Polasciana finally hosting the games twenty years after the 2008 edition was cancelled due to economic pressures which saw most competing nations withdraw. The two billion Kryak National Sporting Complex in Ukhyny, built for those games, will be the major focus for participants. Ski events are again planned to take place in the Brezúga resort, close to Niveri. It is likely the games will however this time be known as ‘Yevcimir 2028’ and there is also expected to be a deal with Uttania over the use of Pregny airport as a key transport hub, cutting journey times for participants and spectators. The bidding process for this edition was much more opaque this time than in 2006 when Ukhyny was originally appointed, but the government is thought to have provided a similar number of financial and security commitments. Arvi, Kiasé and Ukhyny were all also previously looked at as potential candidates for a bid for the 2012 summer games, but a formal nomination was never submitted. This year’s winter games will take place in Pirané, Republica del Sur, in November.
Former Prime Minister Yanaka in running for WTB Chair position
Marina Yanaka’s nomination to become the World Trade Board’s next Chair is gaining momentum among a number of member states. The government announced Yanaka’s candidacy early last month, following a push by Prime Minister Serbin to try and secure the influential role for a Polascianan official. Yanaka is seeking to make herself the voice of ‘underrepresented countries’ – with an explicit pitch towards developing and transition economies in Gallia and Sarvaria but also in both Calania and Hesperia. In a major speech last week in Gouw Marken, the former Prime Minister said “it is time that more voices are heard in economic debates. Far too much time at WTB summits is focused around the interests of a small number of countries that dominate debate over a range of different perspectives across the globe. We must take more time, more care and more interest in other views. We must learn and be willing to think differently.” Her campaign has peaked interest in several major national capitals. Current Finance Minister Lena Zilberman is thought to have turned down a suggestion by the government that she run, instead backing Ms Yanaka for the role. Current Chair Jorge Téllez from Aleconia will step down at the end of the month. The successful candidate to take over will be announced in the coming weeks after a vote at the WTB annual gathering, this year being held in Tappa, Telora.
Debt plan receives Assembly approval as infrastructure projects begin
500 billion Kryak will be borrowed by the government over the next five years to support targeted infrastructure spending. A deal between the coalition parties and President Tattar will leave the current so-called ‘debt cap’ in place and unchanged, but see borrowing rise based on the issuance of a new ‘Invest Polasciana’ bond. The move will effectively allow the government to increase borrowing in the short-term without increasing the national debt. The new bond is underwritten by a government report showing economic growth rising faster than expected, which the Finance Ministry believes will see its plan be able to raise additional capital after this initial investment period. 16 major projects will now move into a planning phase. This includes a 100 billion up-front transport package that will see Arvi Airport rebuilt over the next 3 years and ground broken on two new regional runways on Polasciana’s southern islands. An extension to the Energy Independence Act will also bring additional investment into the Schnet Coast oil industry – with exploration into a new ‘Illyusha 2’ field off the shores of Idir. President Tattar said the announcements were “just the start of the beginning” and that additional projects would now be identified for approval, alongside local and state leaders.
