The nominees for October’s Presidential contest are likely to face an early challenge as the CentristsĀ agree to hold a by-election for their currently vacant regional seat of Rogan for the lower-house. The seat was held by former cabinet minister Lena Zilberman who quit front-line politics earlier in the year citing personal reasons. The current front-runner for the race which is to be held on September 25th, is Illya Ellanovic the CentristĀ candidate, a former colleague of Ms Zilberman’s in the private sector. Just four weeks before the first ballot of the national election, this contest is likely to be a major indicator for what is considered a close race. The CentristsĀ held the region with 83.3% of the vote at the last election – but many analysts have attributed this to Ms Zilberman’s personal appeal.
