Special election fight begins in Medyn as both major candidates hit campaign trail

Former Kamchetkan Governor, Stepan Michalvich, pictured on the campaign trail on Wednesday, is expected to take the Medyn seat from the Prime Minister’s Coalition in a major upset

The campaign for next week’s special election in Medyn, Kamchetka, has begun following the start of electioneering by both major candidates. Former Governor Stepan Michalvich will contest the race for the Unionist party he used to lead, lining up against the Prime Minister’s husband, Dmitri Alenichev. The seat was made vacant following the resignation of former Coalition minister Benjamin Usan.

Mr Michalvich has been suggested as the clear frontrunner for the seat, which will vote on Sunday 15th, in a blow to the Prime Minister who was hoping the high profile selection of her former football player spouse would enable her party to retain the seat. But on Sunday the former Governor’s entry into the race has shaken things up. Alenichev, a Kamchetkan native, has been seen at the prime minister’s side since her meteoric rise through the ranks in the Centrist Progressive coalition.
