Marina Yanaka, the Deputy Leader of the Centrists, has said the party is ‘considering a review’ of its commitment to lower defence spending.
Under pressure from the opposition spokesperson for defence, Ms Yanaka conceded that in the light of a ‘changing scenario’ in the Long Sea between regional neighbours the party was reconsidering its suggestion that government spending on the military was ‘too high’.
Unlike other government policy, defence spending is controlled jointly together with the President, and is approved in the Federal Council, currently controlled by the Union Party.
Yanaka denied the change of policy was against the party’s commitments made during the Legislative Elections in 2008.
