A close ally of the President and the official opposition, Yuri Schechan has been rushed to hospital in what close aides to the Commander General call a “suspected heart attack.” Schechan, who heads the Polascianan Armed Forces is 64 years old and has been reportedly suffering from ill health for a “few weeks.” Expected to remain in post until 2020 at the latest, he is being replaced temporarily by his deputy, Taras Kholodov who remains a controversial figure within the military. President Lukyanov said the whole nation, “Wished General Schechan well, and hoped he had a swift recovery.” The two men have a close working relationship, which has come under fire from more moderate forces within political and military circles.
